A great day out
There’s something for everyone at Birling Gap. Families will enjoy its pretty beach, perfect for picnics, rock-pooling and a spot of fossil-hunting - and don’t forget your wetsuit, as it’s one of the best places to surf in the South East!
When it’s time for a stroll, the open chalk grasslands inland are a haven for butterflies and flowers, and with its astonishingly diverse habitats, you could make a start on spotting a few of the 1,000 different species of wildlife that have been recorded in this rich and wonderful place.
This area has been thriving since prehistoric times, and the ongoing Seven Sisters Archeology Project provides ever-new insights into its history. The area is dog-friendly, and there are wonderful walks to enjoy in every direction, from strolling up the hill to check out Mad Jack Fuller’s Folly (try saying that seven times with a mouth full of ice cream…), to a visit to the ancient village of Exceat along the river. Guided walks are possible too; just pop into the Visitors Centre on the cliff top for details, and for maps, other essentials and gifts.
