The best coastal walks in East Sussex

If you’re booked in for a getaway at Horsted Place, we’re not surprised you’ve landed here… one of the main reasons our guests come and stay is to escape their busy lives and get out and about on some fantastic coastal walks, out in the fresh air for spectacular viewing opportunities.

It’s no secret that East Sussex is home to some glorious walks; there are many, many routes you might consider, but let us start you off with some of our favourite East Sussex coastal walks:

Mediterranean oasis in East Sussex

Named as one of the top best beaches in East Sussex on Tripadvisor, Cuckmere Haven Beach is a fantastic walking opportunity. Nestled between Eastbourne and Seaford, it’s every bit as beautiful as a Mediterranean island. Best known as a filming hotspot for the likes of Harry Potter, Atonement and Luther, it features a lovely golden beach and the chance to see a 1890 shipwreck at low tide - and also the renowned Seven Sisters headland.

Beware of the tides

Another Seven Sisters coastal walk can be enjoyed at Birling Gap. This is a top spot for walking - but only at low tide - so if you’re one for a longer walk, then beware and make sure you know the tide times! This area boasts naturally formed rock pools where you can spot all the wildlife swimming around, and there’s also ample opportunity to go fossil hunting. If you’re searching for a coastal walk the whole family can enjoy then this is the one to take the little people.

Cattle and ponies galore

A lovely circular route option is via Hastings Country Park. This 11.6 kilometre trail that starts and ends in Hastings (that means a pint or ice cream awaits!) features beautiful wild flowers and, along the way, great opportunities to spot ponies and cattle. Please note this route has been rated as difficult as the terrain does vary and includes some steep inclines. For those seasoned hikers though this means guaranteed incredible views and a cracking adventure.

One for the pups

For a longer coastal stroll consider the Seaford to Eastbourne route, which is a moderate 21.9 kilometre point-to-point trail. Accessible all year round, feel free to bring your furry friends along for the day out too, as this one is both people and dog friendly, described as a route best for experiencing the Seven Sisters. A word of caution - always remain 5 metres away from the edge; chalk is very brittle and these coastal cliffs are prone to crumbling.

Now for the fun bit: start at Seaford Beach and continue through to Hope Gap, where you can descend to the beach (during low tide). Next, you’ll work your way over to Cuckmere Haven followed by a series of 40-50m soft ascents and descents from Haven and Birling Gap. Now it’s time to follow in the direction of Belle Tout Lighthouse to Beachy Head. Now, you’ll continue in the direction of Eastbourne marking the end of the adventure.

Ocean views and rolling hills

If it’s a swift walk of around an hour and a half to two hours, then the Kipling Roedean and Rottingdean Walk in East Sussex is a fantastic opportunity that follows a great path that travels along the gorgeous undercliff. Boasting gorgeous ocean views that can be seen to one side and the rolling hills to the other, you’ll find yourself in awe and wonder through this walk - you’re spoilt for choice where to look. If you’re one for a bit of history this walk is also known for the stories of Rudyard Kipling who was once a resident, and is said to have used the South Downs as inspiration for some of his best poetry.

Keep your eyes peeled, as there’s plenty to spot on this walk from Beacon Hill - the village windmill, and Rottingdean and Brighton Pier in the distance.
